About Verso Books
Verso Books is the largest independent, radical publishing house in the English-speaking world, publishing around one hundred books a year. It grows out of the intellectual and political tradition of the New Left and is committed to radical publishing across politics, history, theory, and culture.
Brief history
- 1970 – New Left Books (NLB) is launched by *New Left Review*, using the Tatlin Tower as its logo. The early list focuses on translations of European political and social theory, economics, philosophy, and critical analysis of global politics.
- 1970s–1980s – NLB publishes influential works by theorists such as Theodor Adorno, Louis Althusser, Walter Benjamin, Henri Lefebvre, Georg Lukács, Ernest Mandel, Herbert Marcuse, Jean-Paul Sartre and Max Weber, alongside original works by Perry Anderson, Terry Eagleton, Tom Nairn and Raymond Williams.
- Late 1970s – Verso is launched as a paperback imprint and later becomes the sole imprint of NLB.
- 1990s – Verso opens a New York office and expands across fields including historical sociology, cultural and literary theory, international relations, political theory and geography.
- 2000s onwards – Verso continues to publish landmark books on international politics, the Middle East, South America, capitalism, feminism, nationalism, social theory, and culture, as well as selected fiction, biography and memoir.
Today Verso maintains editorial teams in New York, London and Paris, and its books are translated into many languages worldwide.
