Initial Consultation

  • The initial consultation is one hour total.
  • It combines:
  • A complimentary 30-minute consultation (meet the tutor, ask questions, and outline a tutoring plan), and
  • A 30-minute paid tutoring session.

Session Format and Frequency

  • Sessions are one-on-one.
  • Most students meet with their tutor at least once per week for one hour per session.
  • Session frequency can vary based on:
  • Student and tutor availability
  • Family budget
  • How soon the next test date is

We offer sessions 7 days a week. During the school year, weekday sessions typically take place in the afternoon and evening. Exact days and times depend on tutor and student availability.

Most students require at least 10–12 sessions of tutoring. Some students need more; others may need fewer, depending on their goals and starting point.

One-on-One Focus (No Group Classes)

Stumptown Test Prep generally does not offer classes. The focus is on high-quality, specialized one-on-one preparation tailored to each student's strengths, weaknesses, motivation, and test anxiety.

Test Registration

Students and families must register directly with the official testing agencies for any exam they plan to take.

  • To register for the SAT: visit the College Board website.
  • To register for the ACT: visit the ACT website.
  • For other tests (such as GRE, GMAT, LSAT, SSAT, HSPT), use the official testing organization's website.

Stumptown Test Prep does not handle test registration on a student's behalf.

When to Start Test Prep

  • Many students begin prep the summer before junior year to get ready for the PSAT.
  • Others start about four months before their first planned SAT or ACT test date.
  • Some sophomores begin earlier, though 9th and 10th graders are often best served by focusing on strong fundamental math and English skills and reading regularly.

Coffee and Other Notes

Stumptown Test Prep is not affiliated with the local coffee roaster that shares the "Stumptown" name. The name refers to one of Portland's oldest nicknames.

Students are welcome to bring coffee to their sessions if they like.
