Continuing Education for NY Real Estate Licensees
New York State Continuing Education Requirement
The New York Department of State requires all real estate licensees (both salespersons and brokers) to complete 22.5 hours of approved real estate continuing education (CE) within each two-year license term.
There is no longer an exemption based on years of licensure; as of July 1, 2021, even long-tenured brokers who were previously exempt must complete CE.
Required CE Topics
According to the Department of State, the 22.5 hours of CE must include at least:
- 2 hours of instruction on cultural competency.
- 2 hours of instruction on implicit bias.
- 2.5 hours on ethical business practices.
- At least 1 hour on recent legal matters.
- At least 3 hours on fair housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest in real property.
- At least 1 hour on the law of agency (for salespersons in the initial two-year licensing term, 2 hours of agency-related instruction are required within the two-year period immediately preceding renewal).
NYREI Continuing Education Offerings
NYREI offers a wide range of CE options, including:
- Complete 22.5-hour CE packages that satisfy all New York State mandated topics.
- Individual CE courses typically credited for either 3.75 hours or 7.5 hours.
- Online self-paced CE packages, allowing students to complete the 22.5-hour requirement online.
- Certain longer courses that are approved for CE credit, including for example:
- 15 Hour Title Closing Procedures for Real Estate Transactions
- 19.5 Hour Commercial Real Estate Certificate course
- 20 Hour NY SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator Course
- 22.5 Hour Construction Management Certificate course
- 22.5 Hour Property Management Certificate course
- 22.5 Hour Real Estate and Investments course
- The 77-hour Brokers course (must be completed in full, including the school exam, to receive CE credit)
NYREI's CE packages include the state-mandated topics such as agency law, legal matters, ethical business practices, fair housing and diversity, plus the newer requirements for implicit bias and cultural competency.
Deadlines and Renewal
- All 22.5 hours of CE must be completed before a license expires.
- Licensees receive renewal reminders from the Department of State by postcard and email (via their eAccessNY account).
- To renew, licensees must log into eAccessNY and complete the renewal process.
If a License Expires
- If a license is not renewed, the licensee may not conduct any real estate activities that require a New York State real estate license.
- There are no grace periods that allow licensed activity after expiration.
- Licensees have two years from the expiration date to renew the license.
- If they do not renew within that period, they must re-qualify by passing the written state licensing examination again. In that case, CE for the past term is not required, but the licensing process must be repeated.
For current CE schedules, package details and pricing, refer directly to NYREI's CE course information or contact the school.

- The state exam is given on a regular schedule and a state exam fee applies.
Both the NYREI Broker school exam and the New York State Broker licensing exam must be passed in order to apply for a Broker license.
Continuing Education and Broker Courses
Some broker-level coursework may also count toward New York State continuing education (CE) requirements, subject to Department of State rules. For example, the DOS notes that if completing the broker course for CE, additional hours in specific topics (such as ethical business practices and recent legal matters) may still be required.
For the most current broker course schedule, detailed requirements and pricing, refer directly to NYREI's own broker course information or contact the school.
