About Modumetal
Modumetal company overview
Modumetal is a nanotechnology company focused on improving the performance of industrial materials by developing new applications and scalable processes that revolutionize how metals are used.
What Modumetal does
- Develops nanolaminated metal alloys that are grown onto base materials using a proprietary electrochemical process.
- Delivers materials with superior strength, durability, corrosion resistance and other enhanced properties compared to conventional metals.
- Brings nanoscale materials to industrial-scale applications in both above-surface and subsurface environments.
Nanolaminated metals technology
- Modumetal uses proprietary chemistry and processes to control the metallic structure at the nanolayer scale.
- Alloys are built up atom by atom with different stacking sequences and layer thicknesses, creating nanolayered structures.
- This enables improved toughness, strength, thermal properties and corrosion resistance relative to conventional metals.
Scalable, cost-efficient manufacturing
- Modumetal's nanolamination manufacturing process is designed to be integrated with existing industrial electroplating infrastructure.
- A standard Zn-Ni electroplating line can be upgraded with minimal additional investment to support Modumetal's technology.
- The goal is to deliver improved material performance while remaining cost-competitive with conventional metals at industrial scale.
Environmental and sustainability focus
- The nanolamination process is designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable.
- Benefits described by Modumetal include reduced waste streams, better capacity utilization and lower energy consumption compared with conventional approaches.
- The technology is positioned to extend service life of components and structures, supporting more sustainable use of materials.
Company history (selected milestones)
- 2006 – Modumetal was co-founded by Christina Lomasney and John Whitaker to advance a new class of nanolaminated metals, based on a patented electrochemical process for producing nanolaminated metal alloys.
- 2011 – Independent laboratory testing for corrosion mitigation was completed and full-scale field trials began, including safety-critical applications. Pilot manufacturing lines were scaled up to support these field trials, and Modumetal's performance claims were validated by certified test laboratories and end customers.
- 2018 – Customers in industries such as oil and gas, engineering/procurement/construction (EPC) and marine products added NanoGalv® products to their specifications. NanoGalv® outperformed existing approved products in both performance and cost. Field testing continued in safety-critical applications and in comparison with conventional alloys.
- 2020 – Modumetal engaged an experienced leadership team in sales, manufacturing and finance to support growth, and completed construction and commissioning of an automated production facility in Houston, Texas to produce NanoGalv® products at industrial scale.
- 2021–2025 – Modumetal supported the automotive industry, subjecting NanoGalv® to standard automotive tests (including PV-1209, coefficient of friction testing per ISO 16047, and embrittlement testing per ASTM F519) and reports successfully passing these tests at a 5 μm thickness. NanoGalv® has been evaluated alongside conventional ZnNi coatings and reported to outperform them. In May 2024, Lamons purchased Modumetal's Houston production facility; Lamons' ModuCoatings division is a Modumetal licensee that has seen sales to the oil and gas industry grow, particularly for demanding offshore requirements. Modumetal has also developed the NanoPro® system to help control production lines and has established additional licensees prepared for further growth.
