• Choice of glossy or matte surface finish (depending on part orientation and process)

These capabilities support functional prototypes, casting tools, and finished parts across a range of applications.

3D scanning services

3D Printsmith works with its sister division 3D Scansmith (https://www.3dscansmith.com) to provide 3D scanning and digitizing services for existing parts.

Capabilities

• High-accuracy, high-resolution 3D scanning and inspection of existing parts
• Creation of digital files that can be used to:
• Archive parts to a digital library
• Reverse engineer scarce or unique pieces

CAD modeling from scan data

• Parametric CAD (solid) models can be generated from 3D scan data, provided suitable software is available and the scan is sufficiently comprehensive.
• CAD modeling can include surface and solid models derived from scan data.

Inspection and reporting

• 2D and 3D inspection reports and analysis can be generated from scan data
• Inspection can be used to monitor dimensional changes or verify parts against nominal geometry

Part size and location flexibility

• Very small to very large parts can be scanned, with different technologies used depending on size and requirements
• Both laser and DLP/white light 3D scanning capabilities are available
• On-site scanning is available when required

CAD modeling services

3D Printsmith LLC is vertically integrated to support clients who do not have print-ready CAD models.

CAD tools and outputs

• Uses SolidWorks CAD to develop parts and assemblies
• Produces 3D-printer-ready STL mesh files
• Can take concept sketches or 2D drawings through to finished parts

File repair and improvement

• May be able to repair problematic STL files (e.g. not watertight, open edges, bad mesh areas) using in-house specialized software

Design support

• While not a dedicated design firm, the team has broad and deep product design experience
• Can often help and advise on design-related issues

Basic simulation and analysis

• For SolidWorks-created files, can perform basic simulation analysis
• Helps identify obviously weak areas and adjust models to increase strength in a given direction, up to a desired safety factor for the prototype
